EllieMD
EllieMD is a digital healthcare platform offering online medication services, patient management tools, and educational resources. As the product expanded, the team needed a scalable design system, clear patient-facing experiences, and seamless collaboration between design, operations, and engineering.
Patients were navigating sensitive healthcare decisions—tracking medications, submitting medical information, and completing purchases, so clarity, trust, and usability were critical. My role was to design intuitive, compliant, and scalable experiences that reduced friction while supporting rapid product growth.
My Role & Responsibilities
As the UI/UX Designer, I partnered with the VP of Operations, product stakeholders, and engineering to design core product experiences from the ground up. I owned visual design, interaction patterns, documentation, and developer handoff for multiple product surfaces.
Phase 1: Building the Design System Foundation
Problem: Inconsistent UI patterns and components slowed development and created fragmented user experiences.
Solution: I created a comprehensive UI design system to standardize components and interactions across EllieMD’s platform.
Deliverables included:
Icon library and visual asset standards
Button styles and state variations (primary, secondary, disabled, hover, etc.)
Carousel component with navigation controls
Form components, input fields, and dropdowns
Pop-up modals and alert patterns
Grid system and layout guidelines
Global navigation bar and header patterns
Outcome: The design system accelerated development, ensured visual consistency, and provided a scalable foundation for future features.
Phase 2: Designing the Patient Portal Experience
Problem: Patients needed a centralized, easy-to-use hub to manage medications, communicate with providers, and manage account details.
Process: I worked closely with the VP of Operations to map patient workflows, identify key tasks, and prioritize clarity and accessibility in the interface.
Key features designed:
Medication tracking and reassessment flow for prescription renewals
Order history and shipment tracking
Secure messaging with doctors
Payment method management and personal profile settings
Customer support contact form and submission flow
Outcome: The portal provided patients with a single, intuitive dashboard to manage treatment, reducing confusion and support requests.
Phase 3: Checkout & Medical Intake Flow
Problem: Purchasing medication online requires trust, clarity, and a smooth multi-step process, including sensitive medical data collection.
Solution: I designed an end-to-end checkout journey that balanced regulatory needs with a user-friendly experience.
Flow included:
Medical questionnaire and health intake forms
Billing and shipping information entry
Payment method selection and confirmation
I also designed transactional emails to support the flow:
Order confirmation emails
Abandoned cart reminder emails
Outcome: The checkout flow reduced friction, reinforced trust, and supported compliance while maintaining a clean, modern UX.
Phase 4: Knowledge Center for Patient Education
Problem: Users needed reliable, easy-to-understand information about medications, shipping, and usage to feel confident in their treatment.
Solution: I designed a Knowledge Center that organized educational content into clear, scannable sections.
Content areas included:
Medication explanations and scientific background
Shipping and handling processes
Instructions for medication usage
FAQs and support resources
Outcome: The Knowledge Center empowered users to self-educate and reduced reliance on customer support.
Phase 5: Product Pages & Customizable GLP-1 Experience
Problem: Product pages needed to communicate benefits, scientific credibility, and customization options without overwhelming users.
Solution: I designed product landing pages with strong visual hierarchy and credibility signals.
Elements included:
Benefit highlights and value propositions
Patient testimonials
Scientific and clinical information sections
Iconography, color systems, imagery, and layout design
Customizable GLP-1 Formula Configurator
I designed an interactive configurator allowing users to personalize their treatment:
Choose administration method (injectable vs. oral drops)
Select GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP formulation
Add optional additives to the solution
Outcome: The configurator translated complex medical choices into a guided, user-friendly experience.
Phase 6: Collaboration & Developer Handoff
Problem: Complex healthcare flows required precise implementation and close alignment with engineering.
Solution: I worked closely with the tech team to ensure designs were production-ready.
Responsibilities included:
Detailed UI specifications and documentation
Interaction states and edge case definitions
Responsive behavior guidelines
Ongoing developer support and clarifications
Outcome: Designs were implemented accurately, reducing rework and accelerating product launches.
